ACTIVE HOSPITALS

Active Hospitals

Greater Manchester Moving commissioned photography to support its Active Hospitals project, showing how patients can stay active during their time in hospital.

The brief was to create natural, factual imagery reflecting the diversity of patients and the reality of activity in hospital settings, with photographs suitable for use across digital communications, publications and the website.

A sensitive approach

I visited several hospital settings alongside a communications representative who managed consent and identified patients who were happy to be photographed.

My role was to create natural images while putting people at ease and being sensitive to their individual circumstances.

On a respiratory ward, many of the older patients had limited mobility, so being active could mean taking a few supported steps around the ward or doing seated exercises. I also photographed a movement session on a stroke ward, working quietly and unobtrusively so I could capture the activity without disrupting it.

I also spent time photographing in a youth setting, adapting my approach to a very different environment and age group.

Building trust was an important part of the work. Some patients were nervous about having their photograph taken, so I took time to put people at ease and worked within individual consent preferences around how their photographs could be used.

The result

The resulting images captured the reality of being active in hospital — from small, achievable movements to structured activity sessions — while keeping the people taking part at the centre of the story.

The photographs provided GM Moving with a versatile library for use across its website, social media, reports, internal communications and other marketing materials.
